Choosing lighting for a low ceiling

Measure from floor to ceiling, then subtract the fitting's full installed drop. A 240 cm ceiling with a 25 cm fitting leaves 215 cm below the light; a 40 cm fitting leaves 200 cm. These are measurement examples, not recommended clearances. Check walking routes, door swings and installation requirements before choosing.

Compare flush and semi-flush designs by their actual dimensions. A wide, shallow fitting can give a room presence while using less vertical space. For more help, read our low-ceiling lighting guide, then bring your measurements to our Camberley showroom.

What lights suit a low ceiling?

Flush and shallow semi-flush fittings are the usual choice, along with recessed spotlights where the ceiling void allows. Each keeps light close to the ceiling and preserves clearance below, unlike a pendant that would hang into the room.

Can you have a pendant with a low ceiling?

Sometimes, if it is a short-drop or convertible design fixed close to the ceiling and positioned away from walkways. Over a table you have a little more freedom, since nobody walks beneath it. Where head height is tight, a flush fitting is safer.

How do you make a low room feel brighter?

Spread the light rather than relying on one central fitting: combine a flush light with wall lights or lamps so the whole room is lit and the ceiling does not read as a dark lid. Lighter shades and warmer, well-placed lamps also lift a low space.
