Kitchen & Island Lighting FAQs
How high should pendants hang over a kitchen island?
There is no single correct number. The right height depends on the fitting, ceiling height, island size and the sightlines through the room. Hang them low enough to relate to the island but high enough not to block conversation or views. Read our kitchen-island guide.
How many pendants should I use over an island?
Two or three works in many kitchens, but the right number depends on the length of the island and the width of each fitting. One larger linear fitting can be equally effective.
How far apart should island pendants be?
Space them as a group rather than relying on one fixed measurement. Keep enough room between fittings for each to read clearly and enough distance from the island ends so the arrangement looks balanced.
How do I avoid shadows on kitchen worktops?
Do not rely only on ceiling or island pendants. Under-cabinet or other task lighting can put light in front of you rather than behind you. Read our worktop lighting guide.
Should kitchen lighting be dimmable?
Dimming can be very useful because kitchens shift from task space to social space. Make sure the lamps or LED drivers and dimmer are compatible.
